Boats
Ask
any Northwesterner what is the most important aspect of life, here and you will
invariably hear about the scenery. A central feature of the scenery is all
the water. Human kind cannot live near water without fulfilling the need
to float on it. Hence the topic of this gallery.
Throughout
the Northwest are numerous examples of boats and Ships of all types. The
weekend yachtsman enjoys sailing, rowing, kayaking, canoeing, white water
rafting, and cruising in large and small power and sail boats.
Additionally, most Northwesterners have ridden on the Washington State Ferries
that ply the waters of Puget Sound day in and day out.
While out
on the water, one is also likely to see a multitude of commercial craft,
including tugs, barges, fishboats, ferries, other passenger vessels, survey
vessels as well as large container ships and tankers.
This
gallery is devoted to the various types of vessels found on the waters of Puget
Sound and the rivers feeding into it, as well as the lakes around it.
Opening
Day of Yachting Season
|
|
|
Every year Seattlites celebrate the opening of yachting season
with a celebration on the Montlake cut. Sponsored by Seattle Yacht Club
and Windermere Real Estate, the celebration includes crew racing (shown above)
and a yacht parade of a flotilla of vessels from dozens of Northwest yacht clubs
as well as non-members. At right are two of the younger attendees. Visit
our gallery to view images of this
celebration |

Tall Ships
|
|
 |
Occasionally, we in the Northwest are blessed with a visit from that
rarest of breed, the sailing vessels of a bygone era. Most of
them, nowadays are sail training ships. Even more rare are visits
of multiple tall ships at the same time. One such occasion was the
Tall Ships Tacoma 2005 festival where some 30 classic sailing vessels
visited the Port of Tacoma for a five stay in July. |
Ferries
|
|
|
The
most prominent commercial vessels on Puget Sound are the Washington State
Ferries. Any trip on the Sound will bring one across at least one or two
of these behemoth vessels, carrying hundreds of vehicles and passengers. Shown
at right is the newest of the fleet, the M/V Tacoma on a run from Seattle to
Bainbridge Island. |
