Washington

(State, that is)

Located in the Northwest corner of the United States, Washington is the place everyone thinks of when they think of rain.  In this corner of the country are many stunning vistas and interesting places to visit as well as photograph.  Most of them depend on this rain for their charm.

Examples of places which depend on the rain for their particular character are the Hoh Rain Forest on the Olympic Peninsula, Snoqualmie Falls in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains,  Mount Baker and Mount Rainier, each of which collect huge amounts of snowfall annually, and the agricultural fields of the Skagit and Puyallup Valleys and the Palouse in Southeastern Washington.

Seattle, Washington's largest city offers stunning views of its skyline from Kerry Park, Beacon Hill and West Seattle.  Also from the bluffs of the Magnolia neighborhood, one can view commercial, pleasure and naval vessels plying the waters of Puget Sound, as well as the comings and goings of the Washington State Ferries from the Colman Dock on Seattle's waterfront.

From the Colman Dock, it's just a short hop up the street (and up the hill) to Seattle's Pike Place Market.  If you've ever seen a calendar of Seattle scenes, you've undoubtedly seen this landmark.  If it's color you seek, don't forget to pack plenty of film (if you must), compact flash cards, or whatever, because this area is a gold mine of color and activity.

But, there's more to Washington than just Puget Sound.  By car, one can cross the Cascade Mountain Range in little over an hour and a half and enter an entirely different view of the Northwest.  From the moist, gray climate of the "West Side", one enters the arid farming environs of the "Eastern Half", which comprises considerably more than half of Washington.  Here, the traveler finds the Palouse, Spokane, Lake Chelan and Grand Coulee Dam beckoning.

Also, traveling along the Columbia River Gorge (both sides of the river) can present a multitude of photographic opportunities.
